The history of Wilmot & Co

Mr Wilmot was a solicitor in Fairford, Gloucestershire in 1840. The firm has continued as an independent legal practice since that time.

Mr Wilmot was succeeded by the Hitchman Iles family, who practised successively as father, son and grandson in Fairford for over a century until the grandson’s death in 1958, while still practising in his 70s.

The firm was taken over from Mr Hitchman Iles’ executors by an existing practice nearby who appointed Martin Lee-Browne, then a newly-qualified solicitor, to run the Fairford office. In 1962 Mr Lee-Browne purchased the practice from his employer and became sole proprietor, commencing the modern history of the firm. Two years later he opened a second office in Highworth, Wiltshire and continued the steady expansion of the firm which saw Adrian Grazebrook and Michael Grenfell, the current two senior Partners, join him in 1968 and 1971 respectively.

In 1968 the firm also opened offices in Swindon and Cirencester but, having regard to the nature of the firm’s practice, we decided that we could best serve our growing body of clients by bringing all our staff and resources into one office. This was finally achieved in 2005 when we all came under the same roof at 38 Castle Street, Cirencester.

We have consciously steered clear of the disruptive effect of the amalgamations and takeovers which seem increasingly common in the modern legal profession, and have accordingly been able to expand our partnership, staff and expertise to maintain the principle of putting the client first throughout our modern history to the present day.
